Democide is the intentional killing of unarmed people by their own government or state actors, often through direct actions like executions, massacres, or genocides, or indirectly through policies causing starvation, disease, or other preventable deaths. The term was coined by political scientist R.J. Rummel in the 1990s to describe government-perpetrated murder distinct from war casualties. Examples include Stalin’s purges in the Soviet Union (1930s), which killed millions through forced famine and executions, or the Cambodian genocide under Pol Pot (1975–1979), where around 1.5–2 million people died. Rummel’s research estimated that 20th-century democide claimed over 260 million lives, far exceeding deaths from wars during the same period. And then, there is COVID19:
